Geography and location
Ulm is a city in the south-east of the federal state of Baden-Württemberg on the border with Bavaria. The city stretches along the south bank of the Danube, which forms a natural border between the two federal states. On the other side of the river is the Bavarian sister city of Neu-Ulm.
History
Ulm was first mentioned in a document in 854 and was granted city rights in 1165. Over the course of the Middle Ages, Ulm developed into an important trading city. The city experienced its heyday in the 14th and 15th centuries, when Ulm belonged to the Hanseatic League and was a member of the Swabian League of Cities.
Ulm Minster
One of the city's most famous sights is Ulm Minster. It is the largest Protestant church in Germany and, at 161.53 meters, the tallest church tower in the world. Construction of the cathedral began in 1377 and was not completed until 1890. Climbing the tower offers an impressive view over the city and the surrounding area.
Economy and education
Ulm is an important business location. Companies from the automotive, mechanical engineering and electronics industries are primarily based here. The city is also an important location for education. Ulm University was founded in 1967 and is one of the youngest universities in Germany. It has earned an excellent reputation in the fields of medicine, natural sciences and engineering.
Culture and leisure
With numerous museums, theaters and music events, Ulm offers a rich cultural life. The Ulm Museum houses an important collection of works of art, including the famous Lion Man, one of the oldest known figures in the history of mankind. Another highlight is the Schwörhaus, a historic building that is the setting for the annual Schwör celebration on Schwör Monday.
Transport and infrastructure
The city is particularly well connected to the German highway network via the A7 and A8 freeways. Ulm Central Station is an important hub in the German rail network and local public transport is also well developed. It makes it easy to get around the city.
Special events and traditions
A centuries-old tradition is Schwörmontag, an annual festival. In addition to numerous celebrations and events, the Lord Mayor swears the city constitution on this day. Ulm's Christmas market is also known far beyond the city limits and is a magnet for visitors.
