History of the "Klingenstadt"

The urban area of Solingen emerged from a historical landscape that for centuries consisted of rural farmsteads, independent communities and an ecclesiastical dominion, the Gräfrath monastery. As early as the late Middle Ages, the dukes of Berg established a superior administrative and judicial district based in Solingen. Since the 13th century, the craftsmen and merchants of the Solingen area specialized in the production and distribution of sword blades and knives.
