With about 115,000 inhabitants, Reutlingen is by definition one of the major cities in southern Germany. However, the nearest freeway junction (A8) in the direction of Ulm is just under 25 minutes by car from the center - which in and of itself contributes to peace and quiet and a reduction in emissions in the town. The B 28 (Tübingen - Ulm) and the B 312 (Stuttgart - Biberach - Memmingen) lead through the town. The Scheibengipfeltunnel, which was only opened in 2017, relieves the city center of through traffic. Bicycles are also one of the preferred means of transportation for the people of Reutlingen, accounting for around 15% of traffic (and rising). Regional and long-distance trains run regularly at the main train station, with which, for example, Stuttgart's international airport can be reached in 30 minutes.

The former free imperial city is one of the earliest industrialized cities in Baden-Württemberg and is considered the largest economic center between Stuttgart and Lake Constance.
