Worth knowing and seeing in Kaufbeuren
Marked by its medieval townscape, many places in Kaufbeuren bear witness to its significant history, in which the city was privileged as a free imperial city by Rudolf I of Habsburg in 1286 and was granted city rights by Ludwig IV in 1327. Kaufbeuren lost the status of free imperial city in 1802. Since 1948, the city is again free of the district - and today with about 46,000 inhabitants the fourth largest city in the administrative district of Swabia.
The historic old town center with the boulevard Kaiser-Max-Strasse, an attractive pedestrian zone, idyllic squares and picturesque alleys is always a special highlight for both visitors and locals.
Among the cultural attractions are the former city wall including its towers, the old town hall, the customs house, the Crescentia monastery, time-honored churches and other numerous historical gems. But also the Kunsthaus with its changing exhibitions is always worth a visit. Shopping enthusiasts will find a wide variety of specialty stores and well-known chain stores, as well as a diverse range of restaurants and inviting cafés in Kaufbeuren's city center. In the immediately adjacent inner city areas, shopping centers and various service offers can also be found.
Kaufbeuren's largest district Neugablonz is, in contrast to the medieval center, only a few decades old. It was founded in 1946 by expelled Sudeten Germans from the district of Gablonz (northern Bohemia). It was home to the world-renowned Gablonz glass and jewelry industry, from which a thriving economic sector emerged.
Neugablonz became the center of the German costume jewelry industry and today occupies a special place in Germany's postwar history as a monument to the reconstruction efforts of displaced Germans. According to the size of the district, Neugablonz has developed over the years an appealing retail and gastronomic offer, especially around the New Market, the Gablonzer House and the Sudetenstraße.
Another argument in favor of living in one of the most beautiful places in the Allgäu: Kaufbeurenis according to the German Weather Service (DWD) with about 2.261 hours of sunshine (2020) the sunniest city in Germany!
