Hessenwinkel Neighborhood Profile – Living Between Lake Dämeritz, Nature, and Water

16 July 2026 · Autor: Andreas Gräfenstein

Hessenwinkel – Living Between Forest and Water

Hessenwinkel is one of the quietest and greenest residential areas in southeast Berlin. This small neighborhood is situated between Lake Dämeritz, the Old Spree Arm, and extensive forested areas. Anyone visiting here will quickly sense what makes it so special: plenty of nature, little through traffic, and water practically on your doorstep.

At the same time, Hessenwinkel has remained a part of Berlin. Köpenick, downtown Berlin, and the surrounding area are easily accessible via the nearby Wilhelmshagen S-Bahn station and the surrounding major roads. This combination of seclusion and proximity to the city makes the location particularly attractive.

Lake Dämeritz – Water Shapes Life

Lake Dämeritz forms the natural backdrop of Hessenwinkel. Along its shores are homes, gardens, footbridges, and small boat docks. Walkers enjoy the view across the water, while water sports enthusiasts can set out from here toward Lake Müggelsee, the Spree River, or the Gosener Canal.

Depending on the season, the lake takes on a completely different character: vibrant and blue in summer, calm and golden in fall, or almost fairy-tale-like when snow and ice blanket the watery landscape in winter.

The Russenbrücke and the Old Spree Branch

A particularly charming spot is the so-called Russenbrücke. The wooden bridge spans a side arm of the Spree and connects paths along the waterfront properties and wooded areas. Its long, straight design makes it not only a popular photo subject but also a distinctive feature of the townscape.

From the bridge, various views open up: toward Hessenwinkel, across the Old Spree Branch, and on to the Gosener Canal. Especially in the early morning or in the evening sun, an almost rural atmosphere emerges here—and all within Berlin’s city limits.

Nature right on your doorstep

Hessenwinkel is surrounded by forest. Walking and biking trails lead through the surrounding forest areas, along small bodies of water, and to hidden natural spots. One of these is the Versunkene See, which lies somewhat off the beaten path and particularly well reflects the peaceful, almost enchanted character of the surroundings.

The forests offer space for exercise and relaxation in every season. In summer, they provide shade; in fall, the leaves glow in warm colors; and in winter, a quiet landscape emerges that hardly resembles a metropolis.

The Forest Chapel—a special place surrounded by nature

The Hessenwinkel Forest Chapel is located in the middle of the forest. The small brick building, with its striking tower and green doors, is one of the most unusual structures in the neighborhood. Nestled among tall trees, the chapel appears understated yet impressive.

It exemplifies the special character of Hessenwinkel: nature, history, and architecture are closely intertwined here. For walkers, the Hessenwinkel Forest Chapel is a worthwhile destination and, at the same time, a peaceful retreat from everyday life.

Leisure Activities Amid Water, Forest, and Community

Leisure activities in Hessenwinkel are closely tied to nature. Boating, paddling, biking, jogging, and long walks are part of daily life for many residents. Those who want to cover a bit more ground can continue their trips toward Rahnsdorf, Friedrichshagen, Müggelsee, or Schmöckwitz.

Restaurants and shopping options are primarily located in the neighboring districts. However, it is precisely this quiet location—with little through traffic—that many residents consider a particular advantage.

Living in Hessenwinkel

The neighborhood is predominantly characterized by single-family homes, villas, spacious lots, and unique architectural styles. Properties located directly on or very close to the water are particularly in demand. Private docks, mature trees, and unobstructed views make such properties rare finds on the Berlin real estate market.

In addition to historic homes, there are also modern new constructions and contemporary renovated residential properties. In many places, the development remains low-density, allowing Hessenwinkel to retain its green and private character.

Real Estate Market in Hessenwinkel

Properties in Hessenwinkel appeal primarily to buyers who are specifically seeking tranquility, nature, and a high degree of privacy. The number of available homes and lots is limited. Waterfront properties and high-quality single-family homes, in particular, rarely come onto the market.

When evaluating a property, therefore, it’s not just living space, year of construction, and condition that matter. The exact micro-location, access to water, the orientation of the lot, potential dock facilities, the tree cover, and the legal framework for construction are also decisive factors.

As a regional real estate agent, we are familiar with the unique characteristics of waterfront properties in southeast Berlin. We assist owners with market-based valuations, professional property presentations, and targeting suitable prospective buyers.

Our Conclusion

Hessenwinkel is a haven within Berlin. The neighborhood combines water, forest, and spacious living in a way that has become rare in the capital. Dämeritzsee, the Alter Spreearm, Russenbrücke, and the Waldkapelle create a distinctive environment with a high quality of life.

For those seeking peace and nature without wanting to completely sacrifice proximity to the city, Hessenwinkel is one of the most charming places to live in southeast Berlin.
