Mallorca is the main island in the Spanish Balearics and lies off Spain’s Mediterranean coast. The capital of the island and the Balearics, Palma de Mallorca, is situated in the southwest of Mallorca. It has a well-preserved historical old town, as well as an airport and the largest harbour in the islands. Beside the old centre of the city there are modern, newly developed residential areas with green spaces and an intact infrastructure.

One of the landmarks of the city is La Seu Cathedral, which was built in the Gothic architectural style. Following comprehensive restoration work in the 20th century, in which the internationally renowned Spanish architect Antoni Gaudí also participated, it now glows again in its former glory. The Castell de Bellver, a former defence fortress, rises above the city. From here one has a wide view over the Bay of Palma. To the northwest of Palma is the Serra de Tramuntana mountain range, an unspoilt natural landscape, through which a number of cycling and hiking trails lead and which provides plenty of space for sporting and recreational activities. In summer 2011 the cultural landscape Serra de Tramuntana was added to the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The mountain village of Valldemossa, a popular destination for excursions, is also located in the Tramuntana Mountains.

The largest Balearic island has everything one might need for a modern lifestyle. The good transport connections, the diverse cultural possibilities and the attractive landscape with numerous beaches and a Mediterranean flair make Mallorca an island with a very high quality of life.
