An old garment – in a new guise. Retelling a fairy tale? Turning back time – for the sake of this once beautiful house?! That's what I was asked when I raved to a dear friend about this very special, roughly 300-year-old gem. Looking at the pictures, it will surely be clear to anyone interested what I mean. This is a very striking and historically significant house. One of the longest original timber-framed houses still standing. And it even has a mansard roof. A building one would love to listen to if it could tell its long and fascinating story. It must have originally been built as a manor house and used as a courthouse from 1851 onwards. Until 1878, it was customary, for example, for the Count of Stolberg to vet the judicial officials, which changed after a judicial reform in 1879, transforming the building into a district court. Four prison cells were built in the courtyard during this time, which were later said to have been used as the city archives. After the Heringen District Court was merged with the court in Nordhausen, it was dissolved at this location in 1943, and the building was converted into a residential building. The once magnificent courtroom is said to have continued to be used as a classroom for the Heringen school until 1951 and must have subsequently been divided, as suggested by the pattern of the stucco on the ceiling. This part of the building was then used as a doctor's office with private living quarters by the local general practitioner. The now overgrown garden with its dilapidated greenhouse and swimming pool must have been designed and shaped by him. The building itself has remained largely unchanged since its last use. That is to say, the current owners have begun some necessary restoration work, preserved valuable and distinctive details, but have not yet altered the house through modernization or renovation. Thus, the last and presumably original floor plans, the old wooden doors and floorboards, as well as parts of the stucco ceilings and ornaments are largely still intact. For experts and enthusiasts of this type of architecture, the property offers excellent potential to restore it to an attractive and usable condition. Besides the spacious living areas, the attic and roof truss are a truly impressive structure of wood, space, and time. Its atmosphere inevitably evokes memories of the children's film "Heidi" and her time in Frankfurt. Up here, the division of the house, which occurred at some point, is clearly visible, as is the promising view of the surrounding area, over the rooftops of the neighborhood. Regarding the garden, idyllic is perhaps an apt description, though it has become somewhat overgrown over time. More importantly, it is large, a fitting size for this once magnificent property at approximately 2300 m², and reveals a well-thought-out, park-like layout. The attentive reader will surely have noticed that the half of the building offered here was originally part of a larger whole, forming a single unit, and was divided roughly in the middle over the course of its history and acquired by different owners. These different owners are now willing to sell the two halves of the building separately, thus offering the possibility of bringing the property back under single ownership. It is a listed building and also part of the "Street of Unity" monument ensemble (designated as a monument under Section 2 Paragraph 4 of the Thuringian Monument Protection Act, "characteristic streetscape").
