Vercana is an Italian municipality of 740 inhabitants in the province of Como in Lombardy. Its name means "song of spring" Ver (spring) cana (from Latin canare meaning to sing). The municipality is part of the Mountain Community of Alto Lario Occidentale. The municipal territory of Vercana runs from the shores of Lake Como in the direction of the Alto Lario mountains, following the valley carved by the Bares stream, which forms a series of deep pools. The name of this stream is said to have a common origin with the German term Bär, meaning "bear."
