Your real estate agent for Würzburg and surroundings
Würzburg is the fifth largest city in Bavaria and is located in the administrative district of Lower Franconia. The city on the Main River can look back on a history of over 1,300 years. Würzburg received special honor when the Würzburg Residence, designed by architect Balthasar Neumann, with its courtyard garden and Residenzplatz square, was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1981. The Residenz, whose cantilevered staircase is unique, was built between 1720 and 1744. The most important fresco painter of the time, the Venetian Giovanni Battista Tiepolo, created the largest continuous fresco in the world in this staircase. Nowadays, parts of the Residenz are used by the university as well as by the Martin von Wagner Museum.
In addition to the Residenz, landmarks of the city include the Old University, the Käppele (a pilgrimage church), the Huttenschlösschen, the Bürgerspital zum Heiligen Geist - but the most famous landmark of the city is the Marienberg Fortress, also called "Marienfeste". The universities play a major role: The Julius-Maximilians University, the University of Music and the University of Applied Sciences, together with the Würzburg city administration, form the two largest employers. Otherwise, the city is characterized primarily by small and medium-sized companies in the service sector.
Würzburg also has no shortage of recreational opportunities: numerous festivals, such as the annual "Mozartfest", attract visitors and the cultural offerings also have a wide range. A special feature is also that part of the Way of St. James to Santiago de Compostela passes through Würzburg.
