Highlights of the harbour town
Due to its diverse cultural events, Neustadt was awarded the European flag by the Council of Europe in 1969
in recognition of its services to international understanding and European unity - and has been able to call itself a European city ever since. Founded in 1244 by Count
Adolf IV, the small harbor town with around 15,000 inhabitants is quite tranquil.
The way into the old town leads through the last remaining town gate, the imposing Kremper Tor with its striking gables. It was built in 1244, the year the town was founded, in the brick Gothic style. The zeiTTor museum is also located here, where you can admire Stone Age treasures from the archaeological site in front of the Neustadt harbor entrance and immerse yourself in medieval town life. From there, you walk up to the market square, one of the largest in Schleswig-Holstein, the magnificent white town hall from 1820 and the water feature of the so-called Europa fountain. Narrow alleyways wind their way through the tall rows of historic buildings, the boxes under the windows are lovingly planted with colorful flowers and tiny boutiques are lined up next to ice cream parlors and cafés.
