The new threat: AI fraud in the real estate industry

Criminals use AI to automatically collect data and spy on real estate offers. Sales proceeds, blackmail and the tapping of sensitive data are common targets. Particularly perfidious cases such as the luxury villa in Los Angeles or Elvis Presley's Graceland show that even prominent properties are not safe. In these cases, AI-generated documents were used to manipulate ownership. The result: court cases lasting several years, high costs and uncertain property rights.

A popular scam in everyday life: fraudsters briefly rent an attractive Airbnb apartment and then advertise it as their own property on popular portals. During viewings, interested parties are often pressured into making quick decisions and payments or led to fraudulent links for data theft.

Tips for preventing fraud:

• Check offers: Properties that are too cheap are often suspicious.
• Search for images backwards: This allows you to recognize whether images have already been used on other (possibly fraudulent) sites or have been generated by AI.
• Check imprint and google estate agents: Xing/LinkedIn profiles often provide information about seriousness.
• Use the fake store finder: The consumer protection center offers tools to verify online offers.
• Do not make any hasty decisions: Fraudsters specifically rely on time pressure.
• Always report attempted fraud to the police.
