A Changing Ferragosto
For decades, August meant shuttered stores, empty offices, and a Milan that seemed to come to a standstill.
Today, the picture is different.
International tourism, shorter vacations spread out throughout the year, and the city’s growing internationalization have made August much busier. In 2026, many businesses continued to operate even during the middle weeks of the month.
The return to work after Ferragosto remains an important moment, but it increasingly represents less of a true fresh start.
Milan, quite simply, slows down less.

Continued Growth
Economic data confirm the city’s ability to attract and generate business.
In the second quarter of 2026, the net change between new businesses and closures in the province of Milan was positive by 2,243 units. The services sector and corporations also continue to show positive momentum.
Furthermore, industrial production in Milan grew by 4.3% year-over-year in the first quarter of 2026, with a 5.9% increase in revenue.
Not all sectors are growing at the same pace, but the overall picture paints a picture of an economically dynamic city.

Milan continues to attract investment
The same trend is visible in the commercial real estate market. In the first half of 2026, Milan accounted for approximately 38% of commercial real estate investments in Italy, reaffirming its status as the country’s leading hub.
High-quality offices, prime retail, hospitality, residential properties, and new infrastructure continue to attract capital, with increasingly selective demand for energy-efficient properties and strategic locations.

The True Value of Milan
Finance, fashion, design, innovation, and real estate continue to converge in a single urban ecosystem.
Ferragosto remains part of Italian culture. But in contemporary Milan, August increasingly means slowing down, not stopping.
And in September, business doesn’t start from scratch. Instead, it picks up speed.
