Moers lies to the west of the Ruhr district, on the Lower Rhine in the federal state of North Rhine Westphalia. The former mining town is surrounded by a beautiful natural landscape. As such the mountain lake in the local recreational area of Schwafheim and the forest region of “Heiliger Berg” offer opportunities to enjoy leisure pursuits in the green outdoors.
A symbol of the town is Moers castle. It is one of the oldest intact circular castle complexes in the Rhineland region and is home to a museum, which provides an insight into the town’s history. A worthwhile sight is the “miner’s lamp” at the top of the Rheinpreußen slag heap. This is a lighting installation consisting of an approx. 30 metre high miner's lamp, which plunges the heap into a red light at certain times. A viewing platform is situated at the top of the “miner’s lamp”, from which one enjoys a view over part of the Ruhr district.
The castle grounds and city leisure park offer space for relaxation. The superb infrastructure, historic old town, diverse cultural options and the town’s excellent transport links make Moers an attractive and multifaceted place to live.
