The Rhineland Palatinate capital is well-known as a carnival stronghold and as the headquarters of a large German television channel. The city centre with its narrow alleyways and pretty squares, which date back to the Middle Ages, boasts a multitude of sights. These include the imposing cathedral, which forms the centre of the old town. Also worthy of a visit is the Augustinerstraße, the Mainz boulevard on which the baroque Augustinerkirche is situated. As the birthplace of Johannes Gutenberg, the inventor of printing, Mainz is also renowned as a centre for the art of printing, a field to which the Gutenberg museum for writing and printing is dedicated. The region around the city is characterised by vineyards and belongs to the Rhine-Hesse wine-growing region, which delivers superb wines. The attractive natural landscape surrounding the city, as well as the favourable location with respect to transport links and the close proximity to the Rhine-Main region make Mainz a city with high living and relaxation appeal.
