Brunswick (Braunschweig), also known as the city of the lion, lies in the southwest of Lower Saxony. With around 245,000 inhabitants it is the second-largest city in this state after Hanover, and forms part of the metropolis region of Hanover-Brunswick-Göttingen-Wolfsburg, which was founded in 2005. From the mid-13th century the city was a member of the Hanseatic League and the centre of the region. Today Brunswick is an important location for business and research, leading the Foundation for German Science to award the city with the title of German “City of Science 2007”. Brunswick combines tradition with modernity and its sights include not only the reconstructed historic residence, but also the contemporary Happy RIZZI House, which was designed by the US artist James Rizzi. The Castle Square of Dankwarderode Castle in the city centre, which is surrounded by centuries-old half-timbered houses, is an art-historical rarity.
