On the left hand side of the Lower Rhine, on the opposite side of the Rhine river to Dusseldorf, lies the city of Neuss. It is renowned for its Rhine port and the annual Neuss citizens’ shooting festival. Alongside Trier, Neuss is one of the oldest towns in Germany and is able to look back over a history spanning 2000 years, during which the waterway has always played a significant commercial role. Industry is primarily shaped by the port, and the handling of bulk commodities and containers is dominant here. The good connections with Dusseldorf airport and Mönchengladbach airport with its airstrip for private jets are advantages of the commercial centre of Neuss. Furthermore, the transport network in and around Neuss is also well developed and the city on the Rhine also has something to offer from a cultural perspective: Theatre and museums as well as impressive buildings. These include the imposing Quirinus-Münster church, built in the Romanesque style, and the Obertor gate, the former city gate of Neuss.
