The pearl of the Algarve – Lagos
On the Portuguese Algarve coast lies one of Portugal’s most popular holiday resorts, a city that still maintains its traditional character: Lagos. People are captivated by this well-known coastal city, above all on account of its many kilometres of cliff-lined beaches, its picture-postcard bays and its breathtaking natural landscape. Visitors can choose between long stretches of sand dunes such as those at Meia Praia or smaller, more protected beaches like Camilo Beach or Dona Ana Beach. Tourists really appreciate the climate, which is favourable the whole year round – with an average of 300 days of sunshine every year.
With its exceptionally good infrastructure, Lagos has a lot to offer: tourists from across the globe love its advantages in terms of travel – Faro Airport is just 90 Kilometres away and has national and international flights every day. It’s also possible to get to Lagos by car, train or coach.
Lagos offers attractive properties for all types of home and is of particular interest for those who are hoping to acquire a holiday home as an investment. In the historical old city centre you will find a range of lovingly renovated apartments and in the more outlying districts a charming selection of attractive holiday homes, detached houses and modern villas.
The former centre for seafarers
The enchanting city centre of Lagos, a meeting place for young and old, can best be explored on foot. The historic alleyways of the old city centre with several specialist shops and chain stores are perfect for extensive shopping tours. The cafés and restaurants here have a very special Portuguese flair. Lovingly restored buildings, combined with the brightly-coloured Azujelos tilework (paving stones laid out in patterns), wrought-iron balconies and magical inner courtyards, give the old city centre a special atmosphere. As a former centre for conquest and journeys of discovery by seafarers, Lagos became a prosperous trading city.
Always worth a visit: Meia Praia
The five-kilometre long beach Meia Praia is one of the most famous beaches in the Algarve, and it has everything you could possibly want. The beach consists of a long stretch of sand dunes and is separate from the city centre, starting at the marina and stretching right round to the east until it meets the eastern estuary of the Ria de Alvor. This section of beach attracts visitors with its countless leisure activities, which include trips on inflatable speed boats and parasailing, and its many bars and cafés with live music. The strong north wind at Meia Praia makes it the perfect location for surfing enthusiasts.
Taking a stroll under the palm trees of Praia da Luz
Nowadays, as well as having an impressive sandy bay and a long beach promenade, Praia da Luz, originally a fishing village, also has countless restaurants serving traditional Portuguese dishes. Both visitors and locals come to enjoy the family-friendly atmosphere on hot summer days. This charming coastal town has the perfect conditions for swimming, surfing and diving, which entices many visitors to come here to enjoy an unforgettable holiday. In the area surrounding Praia da Luz there are attractive hiking paths that run along the edge of the coast and also lead into the inland areas. To the west of Praia da Luz you will find the Southwest Alentejo and Vicentine Coast Natural Park. Golf lovers will also find an opportunity to indulge their passion; the Boavista Golf Resort.
Secret tip for nature lovers
In the hinterland of Lagos, in the charming village community of Barao de Sao Joao, there is an approximately 500 hectare area of forest called "Mata Nacional de Barao de Sao Joao". The village is known for its breathtakingly beautiful hiking and cycle paths in the inland areas, and for its zoological gardens. And it’s not only nature lovers who will feel at home here, but also art lovers – artists from all over the world have made their homes in Barao de Sao Joao.
